Presenting VHT04 - The Shallow Graves Collected Promos MMXXIII (Kassel, Germany).
Crushing electronic drum lines, melodic reverb-soaked guitar, and driving bass contrive to spin out heavy meditations on the grief of love grown cold and the agony of self-estrangement. Melodic, contemplative, and haunting; frenetic, obsessive, and bitter. Depending on the moment, any and each might describe The Shallow Graves, whose take on gothic rock bridges a fresh but recognizable classic sound with a bygone golden era. The two promos encapsulated in this release showcase the musical and lyrical talent of The Shallow Graves’ Christian Rossbach, and the deep, gravelly, haunting vocal style of Julian Aust. Bookended as these offerings are by covers of two classic songs (The Sisters of Mercy’s tongue-in-cheek ‘Good Things’ and Second Decay’s lamentation of our shallow world in ‘Anders Sein’), they effortlessly weave the personal with the political - life is fragile, and love is hollow. After all, “you should have known it from the start - there is no love in the phantom heart.”
